This November is full of events we’re looking forward to:
- Open Data Conference, Shanghai, China, 8 November
Michael Cañares will be presenting the ‘Open Data Asia 2020’, which reveals what the state of open data should be in the Asia-Pacific region by 2020. He will share how the open data agenda could be jointly achieved by governments, businesses and civil society organisations in the next three years. Follow his presentation on Twitter at @mikorulez. - Innovation in Government: The New Normal, Paris, France, 20-21 November
The conference will showcase some of the OECD OPSI’s work focused on improving lives through innovation. Antya Widita will be there so follow him @AntyaWidita for his takeaways! - Vietnam Internet Forum, Hanoi, Vietnam, 27-28 November
Glenn Maail will participate in this event, which aims to provide a space to discuss how the internet can contribute to the making of an “open, sustainable and innovative society”. This year’s focus is on how access to open data, the internet and technology can advance sustainable development. Follow @glennmaail for updates. - Open Contracting Conference 2017, Amsterdam, Netherlands, 28-29 November
Open data can be a strong tool to fight corruption, monitor procurement activities, and encourage innovation in business. This conference looks at open contracting data to identify “what’s working, what isn’t and what to do about it”, understand user needs, identify how to design sustainable initiatives, and share experiences and insights. Michael Cañares will be speaking in a session, “How to design your open contracting strategy based on a robust context assessment” on Tuesday at 14:40, so follow him @mikorulez.

- From Protest to Politics: How to Holistically Engage and Empower Youth, Jakarta, Indonesia, 8-10 December
The International Republican Institute is organising a regional workshop as part of their Generation Democracy programme. They will bring together 25 youth representatives from 15 countries across Asia—with whom we will do a mini-workshop with on how to foster government and civil society collaboration inspired by our project in Banyuwangi. - What kind of web do we want?, Jakarta, Indonesia, 13 December
We are organising a screening of net, a film about our founder Sir Tim Berners-Lee’s invention of the web and his vision for its future. Sir Tim gave the web to the world for free – but will we fight for the web we want? Following the screening, our President & CEO, Adrian Lovett will lead a discussion about the pressing challenges facing the web, covering issues including access, privacy, censorship, misinformation online and many others. - Asia Pacific Leader’s Forum on Open Government, Jakarta, Indonesia, 14 December
We’re joining more than 300 participants from across the region to attend this conference with the theme ‘Open Government for Inclusive Development’. The event features a ministerial roundtable, a sub-national roundtable, and 4 parallel sessions that discusses public service delivery, economic growth, trust in government, and environmental health. The Web Foundation, through the Open Data Lab Jakarta, is co-organising a panel on open government and restoring trust in government.
The past few weeks also saw us busy:
- Istanbul Innovation Days and the World Habitat Day
We attended the two events, with the latter focusing on a session that delved into the affordability of open cities. - Data Innovation Project, “Measuring the Unmeasured”, Istanbul, Turkey, 16-17 October
Participants from 13 countries across the globe were brought together for this event. In those two days, members of the team worked with other participants to identify ways to measure the SDGs Tier III indicators by devising research questions, mapping challenges and figuring out solutions and concrete ways forward.
Our Lab Manager, Antya Widita attended this event organised by EITI where he gained insights on how open data can be better leveraged to fight corruption—watch out for his blog!- Policy & Practice Dialogue, Appropriating Technology for Accountability: Lessons from ‘Making All Voices Count’, Sussex, UK, 25-26 October
The event acted as a final dialogue for the MAVC programme, where participants – most of which were MAVC grantees and partners – shared their gained experiences about the roles technologies play in empowering citizens and providing them with means to foster more transparent, accountable and responsive governments. The Jakarta Lab is an MAVC partners through our Innovating for Open Cities project.
