There, our Research Manager, Glenn Maail (@glennmaail), will have a session tackling ‘open data and the digital economy’, where we’ll focus on the Asia-Pacific regional findings from the latest edition of the Open Data Barometer. Glenn will dissect and discuss the readiness, implementation, and impact scores of selected participating countries and how these relate to different economic issues in the region.

Development Studies Association Conference at Oxford University in England, UK, from 12 to 14 September. Michael Cañares (@mikorulez), our Regional Research Manager for Asia, will present “From open data to empowerment: lessons from Indonesia and the Philippines”. The presentation will look at four case studies to understand how and why open data can affect the spaces, places, and forms of power and how it provides avenues for citizens to exert efforts to reclaim its space in decision-making, agenda-setting, and meaning-making at the sub-national level.

On the 27th of September, we’ll be attending the Innovation Labs World event in Singapore. The exhibit is the culmination of the Jakarta Lab’s joint project with Goethe-Institut Indonesien, where we aim to capture how different stakeholders produce or use data, and how data is represented in everyday life. Yogyakarta will be the first stop in the traveling exhibit, with the photographs also to be displayed at the IODC in Madrid and later this year at the Goethehaus in Jakarta. There, we’ll be presenting two papers based on the Jakarta Lab’s experiences:

First, Glenn (@glennmaail) will discuss a paper entitled “Relational Impact of Open Data Intermediation: Experience From Indonesia and the Philippines”, which tackles the role and significance of intermediaries – the ‘go-between’ or those who bridge data suppliers and end users through apps, trainings, projects or others – in open data initiatives.

Second, Miko (@mikorulez) will discuss why initiatives in making cities smarter are insufficient – if these are not done within the context of openness and greater participation of citizens in city-building. Using the Jakarta Smart City program as a case, he will propose a framework on how smart cities can transition to open cities.

We will also be at the Open Cities Summit also held on the 5th of October, another pre-IODC event.
