As part of the Open Data Lab Jakarta’s engagement program, our team also works on presentations and talk for universities and other interested organisations to show them the benefits and challenges of open data – tailored to their specific themes or requirements. In the last two months, we gave talks in two universities, which you can download below.
On 19 December 2014, the Lab’s own Josef Hardi presented at the ESQ STIMIK on the topic of using open data for business innovation. His primary objective was to answer the question: is there any value in open data leading to the creation of businesses with financial gains? He thoroughly discussed the various opportunities using the value of open data, and introduced three (3) sample business models: Freemium, Cross-Subsidy, and Network Effects. Freemium means providing open data, and offering additional (non-open) data for a rate. Cross-Subsidy refers to the profitable service that could be provided to transform open data into a comprehensible, mass-friendly format. Network effects refer to crowd-sourcing with open data and through it finding financial sources through indirect means. To learn more about this presentation, download it here.
Prior to that, in November we organized an online presentation in partnership with Binus University to encourage ICT students understand the basics of Open Data and how it can play a critical role in social and economic development. This two hour online session encouraged students to absorb the basics of Open Data and encouraged them to discuss the potential benefits of OD. You could download the presentation here.
